    But there is another coin

    1 Heller ,1905 Deutsch Ostafrika = € 3 - 28
    1 Heller ,1906 Deutsch Ostafrika = € 4 - 33 (Mintmark A, Berlin) & € 9 - 42 (Mintmark J, Hamburg)
20 Heller ,1916 DOA, depending on the metal from € 14 to whatever you are willing to spend. ;-)

    Arabian text ,1892 Deutch Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft = 1 Pesa = € 11 - 42

Antidote, when you take a good look at your German East African 1916 20 Heller, you will see a letter 'T' below the date. This is the mintmark of the Tabora mint. They are always in brass, but copper ones have been reported, which I have never seen.German East Africa included not only what became Tanganyika, but also included what is now Rwanda & Burundi, which went to the Belgians.
Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck was the German military commander in German East Africa during World War I.He surrendered in 1918 at Abercorn,Northern
    Rhodesia (now Zambia).

The Arabian text on your German East Africa Company 1 Pesa is a translation of the German denomination. The origin of 'Pesa' comes from 'Pice'
(a currency unit in British India) through 'Pysa' (a Zanzibari denomination).

let's take a look at the stand. German Cat. for these coins - Kurt Jaeger - German Coins since 1871.
    20 Heller -> Jaeger #724a & b, 725a & b, 726a, 727a = copper; 726b & 727b = brass
Due to the more than primitive working conditions at that time during WW1 they had no chance to use "pure metals". So according to Jaeger most copper coins actually are bronze coins.

(Hope I got this correct. My numismatic English is not the best)

P.S. To me the only interesting DOA coin is the 15 rupies gold coin - the one with the elphant ;)

Antidote,I also like the design of the German East African 15 Rupien coin, which was also struck at Tabora. This coin comes in 2 slightly different varieties.

About the German East African 20 Heller,I have never seen a copper one,as I can guess that the reason why most of them are brass is that the brass
from the bullet casings was used to strike the coins.
How's things over there in Osnabruck?

@Aidan Work, the history of the Tabora mint is indeed very interesting.

Everything's going fine over here. Just won two auctions, I'll pick up the coins after the easter holidays. In case you want to take a look: surf to www.osnabrueckermuenzen.de, click "Münzübersicht", "Direktanzeige über Katalog Nr", select "Kennepohl" (thers's nothing else to select), "Nr." (select 130a & 138) and "Bildvorschau", then "Anzeigen".

(Hope this is not violating any rules. It's an non-commercial site, no selling, no buying, no auctions)

Antidote, thank you for posting that nice photo of Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck.I am glad that you have an interest in the coins of German East Africa. The banknotes of German East Africa are quite
scarce, except for some of the 1 Rupie notes.Did you know that German South West Africa (now Namibia) also had their own notes as well? The most well-known ones are the Swakopmunder Buchhandlung issues from Swakopmund issued in 1914-15,just prior to the South African takeover.

    Aidan.

Did you have a good Easter?

You're welcome. DOA coins are indeed very interesting. Especially the historic background is fascinating. Some time ago there was a very interesting article in one of our european coin magazines (moneytrend). You don't happen to be fluent in german, do you? (I saved that article as pdf) . See attachment for another one of my favorites.

Banknotes have never been of any particular interest to me as far as collecting is concerned - except euro banknotes in my wallet ;-) Nevertheless I've always tried to find the time to get some information on banknotes of the kaiserreich. For me that's also part of collecting coins because it's part of monetary history. One of my favorite sites for DOA banknotes is http://www.gietl-verlag.de/rundumssammeln/handbuch_gs/handbuch_gs-055a.html . A member of the best german coin forum posted a map of DOA last year (http://www.numismatikforum.de/viewtopic.php?t=6283&sid=2e863acf9a1800a1d2f3da32e5666151)
Do you have any other URLs?

Yes we did - especially watching the kids trying to find chocolate eggs and bunnies hidden in our garden. What do you do in NZ - anything special around easter time?

P.S. Try http://www.banknotesworld.com/index.php?sid=071be68523005263b2deb75e28179299 for any questions on german banknotes - don't hesitate to post questions in english - they'll answer.

@antidote : Love DOA coins, coins with interesting history associated with it. I would be interested in the article. Can you kindly mail me too? I don't know how to read German so I will probably use an online translator to translate it to English :)
