I've been looking at some german east africa coins, and i'm really interested in gettting a couple. besides ebay, what are some good places to find them? i'm particularly intersted in a half rupie and 1 rupie silver coins. what should i expect to pay for them in middle grade?

The 1 rupie of 1890 ( Company issue ) is the easiest one on your wishlist. Quite usual and very often in high grades. An EF - speciemen can be obtained for about $ 100. Next is the 1 rupie minted between 1904 and 1914 ( Government issue ), wich should go for perhaps $ 120. The half rupien of both issues are scarcer, though the Company issue is a bit more usual. I do not think you can get one for less than $ 150.

Besides ebay I would recommand the german coinsite " MA Shops ", ans of course any floor - auction.

    Good luck !

    Best regards, Mynter

You will find the coin in UNC offered at auctions like Heritage & icollector. You might want to search for both Tanganyika and German East Africa.

I really enjoy my example. It is much nicer in hand than in my lame photo.

Really a nice example of a 1890 - rupie ! Without the eagle on the helmut, the inscription would have been in german. Latin was only chosen because it was the only way not to devide one of the words. In german it would have been WILHEM II DEUTSCHER KAISER, and DEUTSCHER being devided in DEU - TSCHER by the blody bird was regarded as unrespectfull.

Thanks for the info! Now when I discuss this coin in the future, I will have more story to tell. :)
