Does anyone know what the edge inscription on a German 5 mark, 1934 and 1935 says? I looked in Krause but they do not even mention there being an edge inscription, which I found curious as they usually comment if there is one. Thanks.
I am going from memory, but it is something about the good (benefit) of everyone superceding the good of one person. In later years AH had a simpler saying: All for Germany. If you write out the lettering I can be a little more specific.
JBK - Excellent memory. I posted this same question at coinpeople.com and the reply I got was it meant: "Public interest has priority over self interest" The inscription is: "Gemeinnutz gent vor Eigennutz" with a couple of fancy little designs included to fill out the edge.
I have several German coins from that era. I've never checked them for edge lettering. They're in 2x2s. Now I've got to break them out and check this. Thanks
