I have a coin / token that says, "1789 1st President. U.S.A. 1797 George Washington". It has a profile of George Washington in the center. It is exactly the same on both sides. It is about the size of a quarter. It appears to be made of copper or bronze. I got it when I was a kid living in California, in 1958. Is it a coin or token? Does it have any value? Any information would be appreciated.
Sounds like you might have one of those old tokens that Shell Oil used to give out way back when. Pic?
Pics would help.:smile Is it something like this: http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=...g.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&tbs=isch:1
Yes pics would most definitely help to get an answer. There are literally thousands upon thousands of G. Washington tokens and some of them are actually worth some money. I think I can safely say tho if yours was minted or otherwise casted in 1958 or there abouts, I doubt very much that it's worth anything. Also green18, up there said its probly one of the shell oil jobbers and my guess is he's right. Prior to Shell Oil making the aluminum tokens of the 60's they made some cheap brass ones. As far as I know none that they made are much collectible. good luck
Posting pictures of both sides would help, even if they appear to be the same. I have a book specifically for George Washington tokens, so there is a good chance that it would be listed there.
