According to an online coin catalog. The George IV UK Halfpenny is 28mm and 9.34g The penny is 28mm and 8.8g. Both coins look exactly the same. If a halfpenny circulates, then metal is lost, and could bring it down to the weight of a penny. So how does on tell the difference?
That catalog either isn't correct or else you misread it. The pennies are much bigger than the half pennies. If they weren't then how would the people back in the day have known how much they were worth?
It must be a typo. Size is everything. That said, it's easy to make a mistake when coins are similar looking, but different in size and weight. Note these two coins: The 1724 "farthing" is bigger than than the 1722 farthing. Either the 1724 "farthing" is on a much larger flan (unlikely), it's a counterfeit, or it's a mistake (most likely). I've concluded the 1724 "farthing" is a halfpenny and the mistake was made by even an expert. Unfortunately for the seller, the halfpenny is worth more. guy
Your source is partially wrong or misread. See my website Copper halfpence are 29mm dia and 9.3g (Coincraft says 9.1-9.5g) Copper pence are 34mm diameter and 18.8g
