This one has been dug from the ground and cleaned, but still dropped my jaw to the floor when I pulled it. Made of brass, measures right around 24.5mm and weighs 66.5 grains. Have been trying to come up with a possible value, but have not seen any auction records more recent than 2006 (and none of those were dug/cleaned like mine). I'm sure more records are out there, will keep looking.
Have you checked out http://www.exonumia.com/ Rich Hartzog runs the site. His contact information is on the bottom of the main page if you donate something to his site, Im sure he would be happy to answer any questions you might have. I have talked to him before and he is really a nice guy. ( Sorry I can't help you out anymore, maybe someone else can though )
I'd say it is almost certainly a fake. The workmanship is very crude, and the indian peace medals I have seen are not crude (Except for the first American ones) George II used silver medals not copper. And your medal has an obv claiming to be George II, but the reverse is that of George I's medals. George II had the royal arms for the reverse of his medal. There are also silver and bronze peace medals made with George II's bust on them made for the Quakers to present to the indians. These had a seated Indian and European on the reverse with a peace pipe.
Sorry to correct you conder, but mine is the same type as these 7 from a 2006 Stack's auction. They are described as Jamieson figure 5 and Betts 167. Only mine is rougher due to being dug and scrubbed clean. One Two Three Four Five Six Seven
Hi, I found one of these too, mine looks worse than yours but i was wondering did you ever sell it and if so who did you go through?
These medals have been restruck since the originals were minted. You will need to contact someone like John Kraljevich to figure out if it is original or a restrike. He is also someone who might buy it also.
If I had found that, you would have needed to break my fingers to get it away from me. Glad you found someone good to determine authenticity and could buy it.
