General Presidential Dollar Observations

Just a few general observations I've made about the new Presidential Dollars. I've gone through 400 of these things so far, divided equally from both mints. These are the ones in the NF String shotgun wrappers. I'm having a very hard time finding even one "great" coin for my collection. I'm seeing tons of bag marks, and it seems like the ones I find with minor nicks have toning issues. The ledge lettering is another story. Finding a perfect edge lettering imprint seems impossible. I'm treating these as "three fields" as far as grading goes. Just curious as to how others are faring, and if the "official" Mint wrapped rolls are as marked up as the ones I'm getting?

Any of your rolls direct from the Mint. I have both Mint and bank and have found some real nice ones almost proof like

I have only searched 3 rolls, noticed many bag marks nicks and sutch, as others have mentioned the lettering varies, deep on one side, very faint on the other side of the edge, I also found a "D" overstruck the "T" in trust. Not to mention many small die cracks, not many in fact none in "MINT" condition. So i sold two rolls and after lunch i am going to a different bank to get two more, we will see what turns up.

No I haven't looked through any of the official Mint wrapped rolls. I was waiting to see what some people thought of those rolls as opposed to the NF String rolls. If they seem to be better quality with less bag marks, then I might have to break down and pay a premium for them.

Do you know how these companies wrap these coins? They get the coins lose in bags of $1000. They dump them into a hopper or large bin. A conveyer takes them up in bucket's. then they slide down a chute to the wraping process. They have tons of chances to get nicked, scratched, and more.

Yeah, I've seen the operation. The thing that confuses me is this...I've bought rolls, bags, and even boxes of rolls from the Mint and banks around here. These just seem to be more of a problem. I just went through two more rolls and the same thing. I'm running into a lot of toning issues. By this I mean that large sections of the coin is a matte color with no shine.

Don't bother. The company rolling dollars in N.F String wrappers is also wrapping the coins with U.S. Mint 'Official Wrappers.' In fact, the Official U.S. Mint wrapped coins are from the same shipments as N.F. string rolls, and both are treated exactly the same. The only difference is that if you buy directly from the U.S. mint, you'll be paying $10 for a nice, fancy wrapper.

By the way, I have searched about five rolls so far, and have yet to find a single MS-64 or higher GW.

I notice that the "upside down lettering" Washington Dollars are still selling at a premium on eBay. It amazes me that the information about the lettering has yet to become clear in the marketplace.

I have felt the urge to sell some of these "varieties" on ebay myself, but just cannot lower myself to deceiving people into thinking these are rare.

I agree. I'm finding anywhere from 5-10 "upside down" varieties in every roll. These are not rare, are not errors, and anyone selling them as such is taking advantage of people. No edge lettering at all is another story.

Sure, because there are a whole lot of people who don't know the facts.

I've got some coins themselves that are like this. Honest, when I opened the roll, some of the coins were upside-down!!!

But seriously, I'm never amazed at eBay, anymore. Just remember, all you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people...

    my findings

    Hello every one!
I have searched nearly $2500 worth of D mint rolls so far.
    My findings are:
No coins that will grade above 64. The obverse is very difficult to find in gem condition. In fact I have yet to see the face of washington to be mark free. The reverse is fairly common to be in such a nicer grade. The rim however, has many nicks.
2 coins that will grade 64
1 coin with an extra R before the date.(rim)
1 coin with an extra 0 before the date. (rim)
1 dropped letter error of "67" on rim. It looks like the 9 & 7 from the date in which he served.
1 coin with a very tiny black crack running along the rim where the date and motto are.It appears this coin was faintly struck with the motto and date one way.And the incuse design struck the other way.A few letters are visible.
2 coins that have a gold color, deeper than all the others.Almost like real gold. Both found in same roll at both ends. One is golden on both sides. The other is uglier and not as consistent in gold color on both sides.
1 coin missing punctuation mark or period on the side. ( should have two.)
    Quite a few prooflikes.
Many with motto and date "upside down"
I have yet to find 1 coin missing date and motto( smooth)
Found a few with monor doubling on the side.
I still have half a box left, then I will be back for more.
Looks like there will be many errors for this series.
I can imagine the side on the proofs will have as many marks as the circulation strikes.

    Thanks CLAW
