What is the story with that Malta 4 Tari? The date looks to me like 1657 - did the counterstamp re-issue it at a new date? Interesting piece whatever.

 

The generally used date for the counterstruck coins is 1741. Going from memory it was re-valued to 2 Tari at that point. I don’t recall which countermark did this.

Thanks! This coin was minted near the beginning of the War of the Austrian Succession, which ran from 1740-1748. It was a tough start of her reign, but she prevailed and went on to become one of the most influential and enlightened European monarchs of the 18th century.

 

For 1740, here's an interesting Guatemalan "cob" 8 reales. Unlike other mints of the time Guatemala used dies that had the same style design for their milled coinage, which began in 1754.

This coin is a flip double strike. In other words the coin was struck once and was flipped over, inadvertently I am sure, and struck again. It also has a hole - very typical for Guatemalan coinage.

1739 Mainz silver medal – anniversary of Johann Franz von Hoheneck as Mainz cathedral dean. 44 mm; Pr. Alex. 835; Walther 714. Date is chronogram, which is the interesting part of this medal. Normally, 1739 would be represented as MDCCXXXIX, but date appears to be MDCCVVVVVVVIIII.
