Gallienus BI Antoninianus, 3.0g, 24mm OBV: GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate head right. REV: ROMAE AETERNA, Roma helmeted, seated left on shield, holding victory on globe and spear right. REF: I need some help getting a catalog ID for it. It's a minor reverse legend variation on this common seated Roma reverse. At first I thought it was Pax because there is PAX AETERNA legend. Rudi cleared that up for me. Pax is never seated. There is no ROMAE AETERNA legend in RIC as far as I know. The common legend is ROMAE AETERNAE. Does anyone know if this variety is in RIC or another reference book? I would like some help, thanks.
Nice coin, Daryl ... sadly, I really suck at the catalog-part of this hobby (but I'm sure that Bing, or one of the other trusty coin-vets will help ya out!!) ... I only have a fairly low-end Gallienus zoo-panther
I believe the RIC number you are looking for is RIC V-1 (S), Asian Mint 655. The problem is the legend. Yours has no E at the end. Yours may be a variant not listed.
I found plenty of "Pax Aeterna", but no "Romae Aeterna"; however, Rudi is correct. Pax is not seated.
I think this coin is unlisted as well, but I wanted to make sure. Another main difference is that RIC 655 is a bust type portrait, mine is more like a head type portrait. The engraving style also looks different than the Asian mint RIC 655.
Thanks a lot guys for all the help. I'm just documenting it as unlisted for now. I don't see any reference for it at all.
EDIT: I misread the reverse legend. Göbl 1414ff gives this to the Siscia mint, 2nd emission, AD 264-266.
