Has anybody done business with G & F Coin Galleries? I am considering their monthly acquisition program. They mail you coins and you keep or mail back. It seems like it can be a good deal. Free BU Peace Dollar and every 10th month free, should be a good deal. The price point on their packages seems good compared to retail. They don't have an online presence, which as a child of the '90s this is almost unacceptable to me. :smile I'm sure most of you have seen the adverts, as they are in the first few pages of every "Coins" magazine. If you havent here is a little sample: http://coins.coverleaf.com/coins/200901/?pg=5 Let me know your thoughts.
I tried a one time $200 purchase hoping it would lead to a monthly program, sounded good. What I got was a few cleaned coins which even if uncleaned were not worth $200. I complained about the cleanings and was told "all old coins are cleaned". I later resold them listing them as cleaned, lost some money but gained some knowledge. I should have returned them and don't remember why I didn't so I can't comment on their return policy so perhaps it would be worth a try if you would only be out the postage but it didn't work for me.
Though I've never tried them myself, everyone I know who has been duped by a subscription program has had nothing but bad things to say. I wouldn't touch it with your money! Chris
Littleton tried that with me. Sent some other coins with the coins I purchased. I sent them back with the pre paid envelope they sent. Pretty painless, but I would never take un wanted coins in the mail like that. IMHO
Do yourself a big favor, and do not subscribe to this continuity programs . You will only loose some money .
I would be suspicious of anyone selling raw coins on a subscription program. These places are looking to rip you with cleaned / overgraded / overpriced material.
Most of these subscription programs are nothing but a way for large dealers and promoters to get rid of coins that they cannot sell any other way. For the subscribers the subscription programs are terrible ideas because you end up with nothing but a bunch of common date/mint coins that you could have bought at 100 other places for a fraction of what you paid for them in the subscription program.
I want a monthly program - I find it to be a good way to add misc coins to my collection, and it seems it may provoke interest in types I do not currently collect. But, I have yet to fine one I liked. I did try G&F - and QUICKLY told them to pound sand. I received cleaned overpriced coins. When I called them about it, the customer service was as good as the worthless coins.
Trust me, you don't. For half or less than what any monthly program is going to cost, you can get the exact same coins in much better quality.
Agreed, the price is always too high. And, for that reason, I generally steer clear of them. However, I like the concept. All that said, I guess I could add - to compensate for the lack of a suitable monthly program, I genneraly walk into the coin shop and ask to see a couple of "recomendations" around $XX. I find this offers the same concept, better pricing, and a better experience. However, if there were a fairly priced monthly program to ever come about, I would likely look into it and perhaps try it. Call me crazy, but, I like the suprise of opening the shipment sometimes and I find it to be a good introduction to new types/series (I just refuse to pay too much, and refuse poor service).
I am always tempted by these monthly programs. I was sitting at the bookstore today and googled G&F based on a full page ad in whatever coin magazine was in my hands. Sure enough, first thing that comes up is this thread at cointalk! OK, so I guess I won’t be signing up for the monthly Morgan/peace plan... Very happy I avoided that trap. It is unfortunate that there is not a legit monthly coin plan out there (correct me if I am wrong), which delivers a single coin monthly at a set program price $75/$100/$150/$200/etc. There are SOME legit/honest coin dealers selling uncleaned, problem free coins, and many of these dealers are recommended daily in these forums. Why not have a monthly coin program by mail where someone could buy nice examples of coins on a fixed budget? Plus, the customer gets the excitement of opening a new mystery coin each month. I am not too lazy to hunt down my own coins on ebay, so that’s not why I am inclined to have wishful thinking about a program like this. I think it would honestly impose some discipline on what types of coins people add to their collection, it would also enforce discipline on the coin budget. Probably even more important or someone like me: I don’t know enough about coin grading, or trust myself enough even if I have a reasonable grade estimate on a given coin, to ever buy raw coins online or really even raw coins from a dealer. So, for example if a certain dealer that by consensus on Cointalk had a very lengthy and trustworthy reputation, a monthly program would allow raw coins to be delivered to willing buyers. Both parties win, since the dealer has a known pool of monthly members waiting to receive coins of a known series/theme, at a known fixed budget, and these coins could be sold to people like me who would normally never buy raw coins. The dealer also saves money but not having to list as many coins at auction sites, online dealer sites, taking pics of all coins, writing descriptions, or taking up retail space at a LCS. The customer also wins, since they get known good examples of coins, problem free, within the series they like, at a fixed budget they can afford, plus the added fun and excitement when opening the package. Phew, that was long winded! But WHY does something like this not exist!? (correct me if I am wrong)
This reminds me of those buy ten albums for 10 cents programs they used to run. We ended up with a lot of albums we never listened to, you had to buy so many over the next year.
Couldn't agree with the posts more ... wish I had looked at this string earlier. The program was just what I was looking for, to build a collection over time at "special" rates which are quoted as less than retail. I recently gave it a shot for 2 months, and like other posts stated above, could have saved 1/2 my money buying through a coin show dealer or on ebay should you choose to go that way. Unfortunately, would strongly recommend staying away from G&F, such a great idea but such a bad deal!
