If you have a coin with a G-4 obverse and F-12 reverse, do you call it a G-4 coin or a VG-8 coin?

It really depends on the specific coin. Do you have a picture?

No. Actually what I have is an 1800 large cent badly worn on the obverse—an AG3—and a VG8 on the reverse. I’m wondering if it is okay to call it a G4.

Again - pictures would help. The reason I say that is depending on the strike you may go with a higher grade. But I have found on large cents the reverses tend to hold more detail than the obverse. So more than likely it would be ag3 - just speculating.

    AG3/VG8 maybe...

As I understand it most (all?) TPGs assign a grade based upon the worst side of a coin.
    Averaging is NOT done.
(For this answer I'm ignoring grading factors other than wear.)
And the days of split grades are long gone.
