I was wondering what everyone would like to see on commemoratives in the coming years. I have been less than impressed with most of the ones in recent years. Personally, I would like to see a classically inspired design commemorating the anniversaries WWI or the War of 1812. What do you guys and gals think?

I would like to see something that didn't look like a cartoon figure. Actually, the whole idea of creating coins specifically for collectors and managing the mintage to create the illusion of scarcity and value is a bit disturbing.

a classic theme would go good i think, but havenet most of the wars have been hit upon. Of the possibles we are looking at now, i would like to see a Reagan commem. I think it would sell quickly. How about past and present great engineering feats built in the US? or great architectural buildings both big and small? We have had alot of historical greats for people in the US's history .. most never became president.. how about issuing commems for some of them?

IMHO, its not so much the theme that needs to be exciting... but the DESIGN on the coin itself. The last several years, they have had some very good ideas, and some not so good. But some of the designs on even the good themed coins.. well, let me just say there havent been too many i was too keen on.

The problem i think lies with the CAC and that other group.... they are the ones telling the mint what should be done. True the mint can go another direction entirly... but i think we need to refresh the advisory groups who pick the gawd awful designs we have had so much of lately.

    Reagan doesn't deserve a coin!

NO! We didn't even have an LBJ STAMP when he turned 100 last month. Reagan should get nothing.

We didn't have a coin or a stamp for the 250th anniversary of the Albany Congress, the first event in America's quarter mileniumn celebration. If we're going to have a WWI commem, that would be in 2017, which is nine years away. For the war of 1812, have an eagle eating a beaver. The Canadians still hate us for burning down Toronto, and we should stick it to them numismatically.

We didn't have a commem for the Spanish/American War back in '98 so why have one for 1812?

Whoa, ericl, buddy, 'bout a nine on the tension scale there. Lets not offend our many Canadian friends who frequent these forums.

I don't know why the canadians would get mad. We invaded them twice in the war of 1812 and got our butts handed to us BOTH times. It was pretty sad on our part and a very thinly veiled attempt at the expansionism we would later use to take Florida, the American Southwest, and California. It just so happened that those canucks were much better equipped to repel us in terms of both men, materials, and strategy.

How about in 2015 the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. A great victory for the US and a meaningless battle because the war had ended two weeks earlier.

And of course in 2021 we can mark the 100th anneversary of the War to end all wars, and the coin that was issued to mark the end of the war the 1921 peace dollar. (I have to admit I was surprised to learn that WWI didn't end until Nov 1921.)

I like the idea posted about engineering feats. There are a lot of people involved with making great structures in this country and it would be nice for them to be finally recognized. Plus, I think they would help spawn some new collectors.

Just had a thought... what bout a Jerry Reed Commemorative? Hahaha

John A. Roebling (Brooklyn Bridge). His bridge designs still reign.

A Lincoln silver dollar and half for 2009 would be cool with me.
It would go well with the cent program.

That's because they were still British - backed, armed, and supported by England. A British Commonwealth colony.
