I saw this 1928 P Peace Dollar for sale. pretty low bid on it so far with about 30 hours to go. It is raw, but it looks sorta funny lookin ot me... Any of you Peace experts want to give it a glance and see if you see what I see or is it just me?
I'm not the best at picking out fakes and I don't feel this one is, but it does look funny. It looks cleaned along with abused. The S in states and B in Liberty are examples of that. The coin appears to have a light strike as you have noticed by your circle around the word Peace and by the hair around the ear and forehead. I would not pick it up, but that is me. I'd grade it from the noted wear as AU, but the lack of luster has me concerned.
From this picture, it appears to have dead, flat luster indicative of improper cleaning / overdipping.
More I look at it. it has been cleaned and over dipped. Look around the hair bun. You circled two areas that have spots that were not removed from the cleaning and over dipping would take away the luster.
I'm no expert but I would say something is definitiely wrong I noticed a few other issues that you hadn't circled, one the forehead has a strange line running down it between the eyes, the second T in TRVST has a dot next to it typical of a chinese counterfeits not saying it is but what i've seen before, the B in liberty doesn't look like a typical die issue. Best advise I can give if it just doesn't look right and the price appears to good to be true pass on it there's plenty of other deals to be had.
It looks genuine to me. I can't tell if the odd appearance is due to cleaning or if there is a light coating of PVC and/or haze on the surfaces. Regardless, I'd steer clear of it.
I am by no means an expert on Peace dollars; however, this looks like it was improperly cleaned, but, legit. The only think I see wrong is that they used V instead of U
The only item which bothers me is the area around the date, particularly near the "8." It appears to be very smooth; I wonder if it was cleaned there.
