I have a 3 month old daughter and I want to start her coin collection early. In another thread, One collection that was brought up was coins of Her birth year collection. The otehr brought up by user JoesMom was world bullion dated for her birthyear. JoesMom if I may ask for a bit more info on that collection (ie where to start? good contacts?)? Anyone else have good ideas for Fun collections for kids? -Bobby
Bobby~ Check your PMs...I hope I answered some of your questions there As for other collections for kids...hmmmm. Here are my thoughts: 1. Birthyear world bullion...great flash for the cash! 2. Birthyear sets for family members, kind of a family time capsule I suppose. I like to pick through the dealers' boxes and assemble sets of circulated, but nice, coins. So far I've gone as far back as Joe's great great grandparents. As I complete each set I include an explanation of who they are, intersting stories, etc. For example, his great great grandparents came over from Poland and landed in Ellis island. I'm also including pertinent dates such as the year I met his father and the year we were married. Some day it will be a great big story book of his family and hopefully, something he will treasure not only for the history that it represents, but for the thought and care that went into assembling this for him. 3. Coins from your ancestors birthplaces. Joe & I are particularly fond of coins from Poland and Ireland. Besides, I think kids in general are drawn to world coinage as the designs are just plain different from what they're used to...and in many cases more beautiful and imaginative in their designs. 4. How about a type set? Pick up a nice album and begin a US Type set. When your daughter is old enough, she will enjoy looking at the different coins we've had throughout history and will eventually be drawn to a particular series or 2. From there you will be able to build a better collection based on her interests and it will be something that you will be able to do together at local shows and shops. Since Joe is very involved in collecting with me, these are just a few ideas off the top of my head. Good luck, but most of all...have fun!
My 10 year old got interested when I would give him a date of a specific coin, then I would have him look it up in the Red Book. The first time he looked up my S-VDB Lincoln, he couldn't believe what he was looking at! Equating a "penny' with major dollars was his hook into the hobby. Later on he found a 1972 DDO Lincoln in loose change. I sent in to PCGS and it came back AU55. I sold it for him and he pocketed a nice $255 (ebay). Now he is really into to it. penny equals dollars...what a country!
I bought a proof set for the year I was born (1988). I plan on buying another proof set for 2006, when I graduate. I'm also looking for proof sets from other countries for my birth year. I also know that somewhere you can get a birthyear coin put on a necklace.
I heard once about a pretty neat way a guy and his son collected coins. They kept every coin they found laying on the ground put it in a coin envelope and wrote on the envelope where, when, etc. they found it. Sort of like a mini travelogue I guess. Would be interesting to read and bring back some good memories after many years.
My 3 year old son has a pretty massive world collection, especially euros, as 2002 (his birth year) is when they introduced the euro. Collectors from every where have sent singles, mint sets, birth year sets, silver commemoratives and good old DAD and MOM have purchased quite a bit to go along with all of it (world wide). The beauty of a birth year world set of coins is that it is virtually endless and every collector I buy, sell or trade with is always willing to throw in a 2002 dated coin. I have a hard time believing what this little guy already has and my coin dealer has given him 2002 gold and Morgan dollars for his birthday. Won't be long the kid will be worth more than Daddy? And, of course, he stands to end up with my collection so I would say he will have the opportunity to collect for life if he so desires.
Bobby coin. I brought silver walking liberties and gold bullion birth date years for my three sons. I figure I give them the silver ones for their lucky coin when they are older and I'll keep their birth date gold till I die so when they open the old safe deposit box they will have another reminder of my love for them.
Besides the proof silver eagles and mint & proof sets for their birth years, I bought my 2 sons slabbed morgans in MS63 100 yrs prior to their birth years. Nice set to give them once they turn 18. Bill
