This is a nice 38s JEfferson that I just bought. I know that a lot of Jeffersons are CLOSE to being "full steps" but are disqualified due to breaks or small imperfect areas. This may be one, but I'm hoping its complete enough to count as "full steps". What do you all think? And yes, it needs that camera/lighting angle to best show the steps.

I'm not seeing it, sorry. Is it currently in a slab?

No, its in a capsule but I took the picture with the cover off. I may be able to get a better pic, but the steps aren't super obvious at any angle - not like on a proof nickel, where the crew of the ISS could see them if they happenned to be looking down:)

Ah, ok. A white foam Air-tite.
Anyway, I think the pics are good enough. It's got that weakness under column 3. But it is close.

There are NO full steps on that Jefferson.

If your coin didn't have the bag mark crossing the steps under pillar two, it would most likely get the designation of FS.
The 38 Jeffs were the first hub design which had "Wavy Steps". The steps look bridged and kind of mold into each other in the middle.
It really is too bad about that bag mark. The coin looks real nice for a 38.

No, not anywhere near full steps. When you see one with full steps, you will know. Reading the criteria also helps a good deal.

I think "not anywhere close" is a bit much. The OP's coin isn't too far off from this:

The coin you posted has a better strike and no hits on the steps. Big difference.

A bag mark will affect FS designation? Honest question.
I thought FS was about the strike quality only.

Simply put, yes it affects the FS designation.

Lon, the 38's have what is called wavy steps some of the center steps look blended when they aren't. The Mark definitely keeps the coin from FS designation, but you definitely cannot lump 38 Jeffs into the rest of the series. The steps are graded much differently than most here are stating.

Here are two MS65FS from PCGS you can compare your coin yourself.

Caveat needed: IF it occurs on or in the steps.

It is also helpful to note the FS designation is reserved for MS 60 and higher.

NGC has graded a few in AU, not sure if they still do.

It’s literally all about the steps being « full » unfortunately coins with hit marks on the steps don’t qualify for the FS désignation.
