Fugio Queston

Hey all you Fugio owners, and others....Take a look at this Fugio I'm looking at. Haven't spent a lot of time studying these so thoughts and comments welcome. Asking price is $750.
I'm seeing Pointed Rays, Cinquefoils, STATES UNITED and I think Large Letter WE ARE ONE.

I would definitely try to learn a lot about them before you go out and spend $750 on one.

 

Yup that's why I'm trying to borrow some knowledge.

 

It is a 15-Y which I think is about a rarity 4. Looks like a pretty nice coin except for the reverse dig. I am not sure about the price, haven't followed the going prices lately.

 

Thanks, I started tracking Fugio's about 3 months ago, this is the first one that comes close to what I think I had in mind. I expect this process to continue for quite some time. The reverse dig concerns me as well. Appreciate the input.

 

Nice detail on that one, also you can see a die clash at around 7 on the reverse. I don't find the dig too distracting, but I am afraid I don't know much about valuation on these. have you looked at completed auctions on eBay and Heritage for comparisons?

 

Thanks ksparrow, I've been watching for some time now. They seem to be less money but most of what I'm seeing have some corrosion, that's what appealed to me with this one was the finish and eye appeal.

The more I look at this I think l.cutler has called it as a 15Y. I think I see a die break at 7:00 on the obverse also from the cinquefoil toward the sundial base.

 

The 8 pointed stars on the reverse labels are the dead give away as a 15-Y. The obverse die crack helps ID too, especially on lower grade examples.

 

Did someone squish them? They sure look like eggs not coins to me.

 

All kidding aside, just reading the above, you should PASS.

Learn more about them. Try and see at least 100 of them in your own hands before buying one.

I'd say $750 is a wee bit steep, considering the hole on the reverse but it's probably in line with what it's worth without the little hole. Still a nice piece! :thumb:

Thanks HT...Appreciate your comment. This is the first one I've come across that would make it to my "possible" list. I've seen a LOT of these. Overall eye appeal, good solid identifyers, etc. I agree that the price is a question given the rev damage.

Well I'm in no hurry. (This is where I remind my self that this hobby teaches you patience, whether you wanted to learn it or not!)

 

I agree with H.T. That is a nice, wholesome Fugio, and an R-4 variety as identified by I. cutler. It has wear appropriate for a F12-F15 or so specimen. Looks original.
However, it is very slightly damaged, probably post mint, and as such not worth $ 750 in my opinion. Look to spend around that, or less for a problem free R-4, pointed rays, possibly in a slab.
