I have this really nice crisp 81 s morgan dollar. The reverse is very frosty. It is housed in an old plastic holder similar to a capital. The back of the holder has a crack and as you can see from the scans a sweet line of magenta toning has formed directly under the crack. Should i leave it in this holder. Currently she is sitting in a box that is filled with old silver flat packs in original mint packaging.( might help that toning along some!) Although i think this coin would easily score an ms64 it is possible that she would get a 65. If in fact i do submit it, wouldn't it be wise to send it in like this? Also is it even worth it to have such a common date graded? I know there are many examples of this year in really good shape out there. Thoughts and suggestions?
If you like how it's toning (and want it to continue to tone) I would say keep it in the holder, but keep an eye on it, because it could start to change to change to less desirable colors. If you like the toning as it is now (and don't really want it to change) I would say remove it from the holder and put it in a more stable holder, like an airtite. As for grading, imo, it would only be worth it to submit if it graded 65 or higher. It's too hard to tell the grade from the scans, so if you can try to post some pictures of it
Those holders usually turn the coin a pretty gold color. So if you like that, leave it. If not, change it.
If you aren't going to keep it in that holder, and it won't grade at 65 or higher, just put it in an air-tite holder.
Say that this coin had a super toning on it that we all thought made it worth tons. And if he was to want to get that graded could he send that one in in that holder to show the ligamentcy of the toning?
I was thinking the same thing. Otherwise, the graders might think the configuration of the toning to be unnatural and give it a details grade. I know that NGC only charges $1 if the coin isn't in a flip or an OGP holder, so it would be worth it. Chris
Next time you see some toning on a cartwheel that looks a little strange remember this one. Just goes to show the history in each piece no matter what the value.
