The French Foreign Legion was started by King Louis Philippe in 1830. The Legion achieved its greatest battlefield success in French Indo-China vs the Viet-Minh Communist insurgents. After WW2 many German and Axis POWS where given the option either to join the Legion and fight Communism, or go into internment camps. Most joined and fought tyranny in Algeria/ Indo-China.
