I use PS as many do (as a designer I have free access to adobe suite), it is the best out there without doubt but it is also expensive unless you get it for free somehow. Just to let you know that there is a free program called 'gimp'. It is not near as good as PS but for basic photo work for the web, its pretty good and probably has what you need to shrink, cut, and do little fixes to photos.

GIMP is def. a great program is you don't have access to PS or the cash to blow on buying the suite.

The gimp is much better than Photoshop if you know how to use it. Its not even close.

I wont argue all the points as to why, there is simply no question that PS is a far superior program.

Actually -its not close. The gimp has nearly 10,000 plugins and its more intuititive to use. And in Hollywood they program in to do animation and stills (since it is afterall programmable). I, for example have a gimp script to fix the color of all my silver coins and it does it by itself with one command - 80megs+ of graphics converted.

Again, Since this is not a forum to discuss graphics program I wont debate it but it isnt even debatable. I use these programs every day in my capacity as an art director I and many others have reviewed the features of both in similar threads on design forums and every single graphic professional I have ever met or worked with as agreed that there is simply no comparison between the two (though as a free program with a crap load of plug-ins its the best there is and for linux users, well it the only choice). PS is a far superior program but gimp is nice and free. We can certainly disagree on this, I wont lose sleep. If it is the best for you then thats great because its free, it is not the best for those who actualy use these programs as a profession for many reasons.

I am not posting this to debate it, I was just offering it as a good free program one can use if you dont want or cant pony up the bucks for PS.

I certainly have the money but chose not to because everytime I use PS it justn't do what I want it to, nor does it work as good as the gimp.

I know, I teach art students and children with both programs. In fact, I have a whole non-profit dedicated for this. If it wasn't for Pantone colors PS would be a dead product already since the gimp slashed production times for graphics work. BTW free means Free Software as in www.fsf.org and the Pantones are locked out because of Patent Law.

Thats funny, PS does everything I ever need it to within my professional work and very quickly and easily (if you know what you are doing) as well as animation AND prepares graphics for PRINT with pantone colors. I can assure you PS would not be dead whether gimps limitations were overcome or not. Nobody I work with, no print shops I work with, no designers I know of, use gimp and I doubt they will any time soon if ever and there are very real reasons for this, there is just to much PS and the adobe suite like illustrator do that gimp cannot not to mention the new expanded abilities in PSCS2.

I am glad you are satisfied with gimp, a ringing endorcement for a great free program that I started this thread to give a link to those who dont have PS. It truely is a powerful raster imaging utility for the price.

PLEASE discuss the relative merits of software programs in the General Discussion Forum.

Drusus posted a link and recommendation for those having photo posting problems.

    Ruben expressed his disagreement.

That should have been the end of it in this forum.

    Fair notice!

I would be fine if this thread was deleted, I will post another with just this:

Just to let you know that there is a free program called 'gimp'. Its a good free photo editing program and has what you need to shrink, cut, and do little fixes to photos.

I honestly didnt want to debate the gimp vs PS and wasnt aware my comments concerning PS and Gimp would incite such a reaction.

    sorry

It's also a great program if you want to make major alterations to say 15,000 photos at a time such as fixing the color, a problem I face all the time with a yellow color in solver coins in photo's taken under flourecent lights.

Do the opt-in forums ever show any more, because otherwise the posting that was made, edited can never be retorted properly since the forum never shows up on the list of new threads and the above thread is the only announcement of the discussion. Most importantly, they never get into google either.

Anyone can opt in, or out, of the GD and PRWE at any time.

Click on "User CP" at the top of the page, scroll down and click on "Group Memberships" on the left side, and click on "Join Group". Until (and unless) you go back and opt out, you'll see those forums and their threads just like any other.

But the forums still don't show up on the list, even after opting in. I hated to leave so many false statements left up and then to find the responses are still not viewable under forums, even when opted in, which is why I'm sure that the Photoshop guy posted the link in here.

Ruben - I just opted in to the GD, clicked on "New Posts", and got a listing that included a thread in the GD concerning the Gimp/Photoshop controversey, so I suggest you double check and make sure you have joined the group.

BTW if you can't find the thread, who made the 15 out of 23 postings in it which have your avatar and signature attached?
