Some of you will be pleased to know that the Franklin Mint is getting back into the coin & medal striking business after a 5 year absence.

The Franklin Mint is the U.S. equivilant of the Pobjoy Mint & the New Zealand Mint.

You can be kept informed of the Franklin Mint's coin issues here; www.franklinmint.com .

I just read that they were buying a hoard of shipwreck coins and are going to sell them on one of the cable TV shows.

When I was in High School back in the late 60’s the Franklin Mint was in a small building in Folcroft Pa a friend of mine had a job there after school as a watchman , they were making coins for foreign countries and coins for gas station games . Next thing I know he learns to be a die setter for them. He went out bought himself a new 1968 Barracuda. He quit that job and cashed in his stock what a fool at the time there were maybe only 30 people working there, and then they moved to RT 1 in Media Pa giant building with a museum.
He could have been a contender;)

    PS
I burned his clutch out on that car when he was teaching me to drive stick:D

A tempest in a teacup. I think this is one big last hurrah for the folks who brought you ''Gone with the wind'' plates. Gold plated coins just dont do it for me. I mean maybe if they were .999 silver, maybe.

I've got a few coins from various British Commonwealth countries that were struck at the Franklin Mint. Some of them were actually released into circulation, such as the coins from the Cook Islands denominated between 1c. & 50c.

Do you mean to tell me the vast amount of coins from the Cook Islands I have been hoarding for years in several bank vaults here in the U.S.A were minted by the Franklin mint I'm ruined. [IMG] never mind I remember how I gave all them away as gifts :D

Bruce, they're still collectable. In fact, quite a few British Commonwealth Pacific Islands states had coins & medal-coins struck at the Franklin Mint, including Papua New Guinea.

I have got 2 coins from the Bahamas that were struck there - a 1971FM 5c.,& a 1974FM 15c.,plus 2 coins from the British Virgin Islands that were also struck there.

No, Franklin Mint isn't like the New Zealand mint in any way. Just like the Pobjoy Mint, it released too much modern nonsense, tokens etc. Not only that, the Franklin Mint did major crimes by tearing up some rare mint sets which the 1976 Soviet Mint sets have recently been noticed to be scarce, thanks to many packagings that are repacked into ugly cardboard Franklin packagings. No wonder it was shut down for a few years as it wasn't profitable for obvious reasons.
