My grandfather gave me his coin collection and it is mostly silver coins, but I was curious of the value of a 1948 Franklin half. The thing is this is very tarnished, but everything shows up clearly as in on the bell I can read Pass and Stow.

There are also a few other ones not sure if they are anything special, but if any stand out I would like to know.

    Thanks! :)

The fact that it is tarnished may be a good thing. Can you post pics of the coins ?

Yea, probably this weekend. I need to buy batteries for my digital camera. Only this one Franklin is tarnished. It is very sharp when compared to the other ones. I have no idea why this one is like this.

All together there are atleast 15+ silver coins, plus a few I have somewhere else. Need to find those.

Make sure you handle them carefully - only touch the edges.

Yep haha I know, although these coins definetly were not through out their life time.

    1948 is $5 if it's VF-20. The rest is $3.50. B12

But B12....I have paid more than that for a 48....are you using the Red Book as a price guide??...if so...don't...its not the best.
If this coin is a higher grade with toning it could be more than $5...
A good rule to go by is that any "run of the mill", low grade Franklin is worth $2.50-$3.00...

Alrite thanks a lot. I will try to get some pictures soon. I really want to submit some coints to be graded. Would it be worth it for this coin? I also have a 1988 gold eagle I would also submit. I need to figure it out at a later time. I should also inventory my collection. Too many coins.

It's hard to say if it would be worth it to get graded without seeing the coin. Once you post a picture, people here will definitely help you.

Also, what is the denomination of your 1988 gold piece? 5,10,25, 50 dollars?

The Frankie is likely worth about $5 - $7 - it's not worth having it graded.

definately not worth the grading.. but i'd say around XF.. Franklins are a hard thing to grade IMHO. Also, when grading for Full bell lines, send it to PCGS not NGC. My teacher's 4 coins came back MS-65's and 2 were fbl, and i looked at them through a 15 loupe and they are all full.. no doubt. so be leery of NGC.

Speedy... the Red Book is not the best. Why?

I know this was directed at speedy, but I'll say for one thing, they don't price things like full split bands, or full bell lines etc. Also, they don't list a lot of die varieties, and often they don't reflect actual market value. Something like a grey sheet may be better for that. I'll wait until speedy comes along, as he probably has some better reasons than these.

Thanks zanemane. So what is the best book. B12

Well, I don't think there is a best book, I think the red book is a very good book to have, but I would also look at things like realized auction prices on ebay and heritage auctions (something I learned here), and some other sources. If there is a book better than the red book, I don't know what it is. Speedy and GDJMSP know a lot, so I will wait and see if they chime in :)
