Not too long ago I made a thread about collecting the 2 cent piece collection (1864-1872). After more thinking, I have come to the conclusion that the 2 cent piece collection would simply be too much money to buy. Because I really want to complete a set, (all barber halves, all morgan dollars) I think the Franklin half dollar set would be a fun, affordable set that I can purchase without killing (trading) my whole coin collection. I was thinking I could buy them all in around MS-63 or so. The total would be around $1,000. Is this worth it? Will this silver set go up more than the copper two cent piece set? Should I save up the money to complete a 2 cent piece set? Any thoughts, opinions or new ideas are well appreciated.
I am a huge fan of Franklin Halves, and I think you could complete the entire set for $775 instead of 1000!!
I would recommend that you collect what you really itch to collect. If 2¢ pieces float your boat, then collect them. It sounds like you're settling on Franklins because you think it's more "attainable" as a complete set. And it might or might not be, the problem is does it make you as happy? You say that the 2¢ pieces are expensive and that you'll probably never complete a set. I say you never know. A lifetime pursuit can be extremely rewarding but they don't happen in a few years, they happen over many years. Some of the pieces that you may not feel "attainable" at this point may become more so when you're older. Give that idea some thought. If you really want to complete something sooner, I would suggest Peace Dollars. It's a short set. There are no major rarities and you can collect them in a range of grades. MS-63s are readily available. Franklins are really really hard to grade and are not a series for the novice if you're going to try to buy raw uncirculated coins. Just my 2¢
Prices on this series has been falling a bit and is certainly affordable now in MS63. Most in that grade are in the $30-50 range, with only a few around $100. As Zach says, you can probably get the whole set for less than $1000 - unless you insist on Full Bell Lines. If so, you might triple the final cost and have to do without a 53-S.
I agree with you 100%, I've always wanted to collect a 2 cent piece set, I just suggested franklin halves as almost an "easy way out". If I take my time with it, collect the set over a few years and save up, I think it's possible. Thanks for the advice and encouragement
Remember Skyler, Rome wasn't built in a day. Mike gives some excellent and solid advice. One thing I might add to Mikes suggestion on Peace Dollars though. If you go for '63 on all of 'em you're gonna be looking at a set that's gonna be really pricey. That '28 alone is a killer in that grade. I'm not trying to sway your direction, I'm just trying to reinforce what Mike suggested and that is to collect what you like. It takes time to complete a set, but it's worth it in the long run as you will have accomplished something most satisfying indeed.
