    Hi everyone,
I have a fractional printed on one side, bought in an auction down under (australia) .I assume that it was intended to be mounted on a US Fractional Shield.
I remember a story about a big flood in NYC (1990s)where a large amount of US Fractional Shields in Frames were partarly under water.Does anyone know what the goverment (BEP)did with these Shields ?

i wasnt aware any governemtn int he US had a large assortment of fractional sheilds. those shields fetch a nice sum of cash when sold in auction. i just dont see the government holding a stash of something that was released a century ago.

possibly a piece from 1869 Heaths Counterfeit detector. It included a page that featured the faces of 5 notes of the 3rd issue. Surface printed in black on thin white cardboard.

I'm sure I read that but didn't save the article ,I've even saw one from a auction that was half watermarked with stains from the flood in the basement of either the BEP or a post office in NYC.
Here is a description of one from the flood at a Southerby's Auction :

The Shields I'm referring to were used in Banks & Post offices in the 1860s for counterfeit detection ,the one I own is a proof "Specimen" w/narrow margins, the wide Margin Specimens are more valuable.
You can purchase "Copy" Shields that are mass printed .The originals were all printed individually Specimens .The Shield found in the flood were newly discovered & never inventoried .

Thanks for the links. I know about the shields, I was just suggesting that your piece may have been intended for something other than the shield. Sorry for the confusion.
