I sent Leroy Van Allen some coins last week. Got them back today. Four new discoveries! The 1902-O turns out to be a new reverse die. 1884O_16A_1 1884O_16A_2 1921P_3AQ 1921S_1R 1902O_50_1 1902O_50_2 1902O_50_3
Can you post Leroy Van Allen's address and how much he charges to check your Morgans. I am very interested in sending off my entire Morgan collection graded and ungraded for Vam attritbution . I would appreciate any information you provide. Thanks....Oz
I don't think he accepts coins for general attribution. I may be wrong. You could send him an email to confirm. The coins I send to Leroy are ones that I think may be new VAMs. The last printing of the VAM book is the 4th edition. It doesn't contain the the hundreds (or thousands) of additional new discoveries. There are updates to the book that can be purchased from Leroy. When I have a coin to attribute, I search the VAM book, the supplemental updates, check a couple of web sites, and then usually ask for help on one or more coin forums. If I can't identify it, I send it to Leroy with enough funds to cover the return shipping/handling/insurance. There are places that will provide this type of service. ANACS will do VAM research for $6 a coin. Dr. Fey, the author of the Top 100 Book, will do VAM attribution for $5/coin. One of the authors of the Hot 50 and 1878 8TF Attribution Wizards does it as well. I'm sure there are others. Leroy Van Allen's mailing address, email address, and prices for the supplemental updates can be found here. Dr. Fey's site is here. ANACS info is at this link . The VARSLAB site is here.
Ouch. When did that happen? I believe you, but their website and forms still say $6. I think NGC will do it for $7. Maybe the new PCGS VAM registry sets are sparking an interest in VAMs, so it's time to raise rates.
It just happened. When I got my submission back they included new submission forms with higher rates. ANACS hasn't updated their website yet. Charlie
Thanks Charlie. Do you what attribution service PCGS provides? Will they do research or all VAMs or only verify VAMs that are on their list? I know they will only slab and label the ones that are on their list. Not sure what happens if you send one in thinking it's a variety they slab, but it turns out to be a different coin. Did ANACS raise other rates too? I'm mostly interested in the Variety Verification (was $1) and the 5-Day Express Service (was $20 for 1-4 and $15 for 5 or more coins). Thanks. Norm
