I found this wonderful 1857 O Seated Liberty this weekend and was wondering if I should get it slabbed and what company is the best? Also I did not do any cleaning to it other than dip it in water and pat any dirt off of it. Should I soak it in some water for a day or so and pat it with a soft cloth towel to make sure all dirt comes off? What do you guys think it would grade and what the value would be?
I am not an expert on dimes, but the coin will not grade cleanly as it has corrosion, environmental damage. So you have to decide if it's worth the cost to get it authenticated.
Excellent find! I can never get that lucky. You could soak it in pure acetone and rinse it with distilled water. I wouldn't do anything beyond that in regards to cleaning it.
If you're looking to sell, there are probably a dozen fly by the night grading companies that will grade it an MS-67! Just teasing... Congrats on the find whether it's worth having professionally graded or not. It looks like a great coin!
Wow, that's in awesome shape for a dug coin. Won't grade, but it looks to have AU details. In addition to the corrosion, it looks to be hairlined, unfortunately.
It was found in South Louisiana on my wifes family homestead AKA cow pastures The coin is not for sale unless someone makes me an offer I can't refuse...lol Anything is forsale for the right price.
Good god great find! I think I would have a heart attack. Took my Garret 350 out the other day and only came back with an esso motor can. Please do not sell it.. That is one in a million on a treasure hunt. I'm lucky to get a wheat penny or a G-4 Merc Dime.
Well for being in the ground for 150+ years I think the coin is fantastic. Its by far the oldest coin I have found so far.
What did you clean it with a wire brush? argh well even with the corrosion its a tough branch mint that starts to trend upwards fast in AU looks to be a F107
I didn't clean it at all!! Thats how it came out of the ground. Only thing I did was rinse it with water and pat the dirt off.
I have a metal detector I would love to use in the parks one of these days. Maybe I'll be doing a lot of it in the summer.
Thats an awesome find! Id never sell it and I would have made it my avatar too. Really cool. Definitely AU. Ive found alot of modern change in the ground around here. Nothing old.
