Hello to every one, I am very new to this hobby. I found a Canadian coin today, the date is 1880, It has Elizabet ll on the front, and on the back is a bird standingon a branch. Like I said I am very new to this hobby and I don't have a Canadian coin book to check on this coin. So if some one couldhelp me I would appreciate it. thanks Tonya-sr
Welcome to the forum tonya. If it is really dated 1880, it's quite a find, since Elizabeth II wouldn't be born for several decades. Seriously, we really need a picture, or at least a much more detailed description, to give you any real help. For instance, what denomination, what size, what metal, what condition?
If the coin is 1880 the queen would be Victoria. It's the bird on the branch that I don't understand. All the Victorian denominations are the same except for the one cent.On the reverse they have leaves and a crown around the outside with the denomination and date in the centre. The one cent just has leaves all the way around with no crown. Bill
Just an idea as I don't know Canadian coinage - but doesn't one of the modern dates have a wren on the reverse ? Don't suppose that date could be 1980 ??
There aren't any coins from Canada that have a bird sitting on a branch.Bill is right to say that Queen Elizabeth II wasn't even born in 1880,as Queen Victoria was Queen Elizabeth II's great-great-grandmother. Aidan.
Yes Aidan we know that. I thought perhaps the original poster was reading the date wrong or perhaps it a coin with an altered date. That's why I brought up the coin with the wren on it.
GDJMSP,that is a very strong possibility. As a collector of British Commonwealth coins, including those of Canada,I know that the original poster is mistaken in their original identification,as it is certainly not Canadian, nor is it South African. Aidan.
Cayman Island or one of those other Carribean states has a 1c with a bird on it. Perhaps that's the coin in question?
For all I know,it could be from some odd country like the British Virgin Islands or Barbados.Until photos are posted,we cannot say with certainty. Aidan.
Here is a coin matching the description, but the year is 1990 and the country is New Zealand Furthermore, the kiwi is a very unbird-like bird
