today i got back in change a 1941and 1953 d nickel. just thought i would share and also has anyone found any silver nickels in circulation?
Jeffersons are one of the most rewarding series to pull from circulation, and I do get a kick out of coming across a wartime alloy, which happens every few boxes or so (box = $100 of nickels).
I found 4 silver nickels this weekend between 2 boxes of nickels. One of the boxes had tons of 40's-50's nickels while the only only had a couple dozen. Couldn't believe I found 2 in that second box with the low ratio of older nickels, but stranger things have happened.
My boss and I used to run to the bank on our lunch breaks and pick up $20 or so worth of nickels and spend the rest of the day scanning through them. He would find a buffalo here and there. One day, he found a worn down 1910 (I think) liberty nickel. A few weeks later, he found three wartime nickels in the same roll. I was only lucky enough to come across a '38 D and a bunch of common pre-1960 stuff. It's all about the thrill of the hunt though.
I've gotten a silver war nickel in change before. I knew what it was the minute I saw the large P on the reverse I even said "Oh look, a silver nickel!" to the teller and the 16 year old kid looked at me a little funny. Roll searching, the oldest i've ever found is a 1940. I'm still waiting for my first 1938 or 1939 jefferson
Just so you know---those aren't silver. The silver nickels are dated 1942-1945, and the one major change was the placment, and size, of the mintmark. It was moved above the Dome and is quite large. Speedy
haven't found any silver nickels out of my $60 searched so far, but have found 19 1940-1959 nickels and a 1938 jefferson and a 1939D jefferson.
