I found it while searching some wheat cents I bought. It's 1887, AG-3 (maybe worse, lol). Sorry no picture, my iPhone camera is terrible ad that's all I've got to work with rt now. The second '8' in the date is worn so far down that it can only be seen under good light at the right angle. Most of the letters in Liberty are there but very worn. And it's a nasty green spot on the back. Since it's such low quality I'm going to try to dip it in acetone to get the green spot off. It made my night
Congrats on the find of your first Indian. You may be careful with the acetone, it has a tendency to turn copper pink.
Although true of many things people use to clean copper with, I've never had pure acetone(not fingernail polish remover) turn any of my Cents pink. That's been my experience at least. Nice find with the IHC! Most that I find like this are AG also, but I'll take them any day.
Congrats on the find! In my opinion that design is one of the nicest in low grades. Most of mine are fairly low grade, but they sound better than yours does. I have had to buy all the ones I have though, I have 18 of them in my collection now. 12 of which I have purchased since last September...what can I say, my local shops have them cheap! Most of them have cost me $1. I did pay $12 for an 1859 last October at CoinFest though.
er, just to clarify to the others since some are under a different assumption. He didn't find it roll searching. He found it in wheat cents that he purchased.
I opted against dipping it, and just put in a 2x2. My finacee thought it was neat until I spent 3 hours with it in hand reading about IHC's on the Internet lol. She doesn't care for it as much anymore!
1886? Do you have a type I or a type II? You should be able to tell even in the AG-3 condition. Does the last feather on the headdress point between the I and C or C and A of AMERICA? They changed design of the indian cent in 1886, and made both kinds that year. nevermind! just saw you found an 1887.
Very cool. Makes a person wonder how many of them are still running around out there. They have to be slowly being hoarded up into collections.
Good find no matter condition. I had an Aunt who used to take out IHC, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes and SLQ's she'd get in change and put them in a sugar bowl in the cabinet. I used to sit there and look at the weird coins and wonder what it was like when they were put into circulation. This was the mid 50's and she passed away while I was "out of country" I asked about that green sugar bowl when I got back, but nobody remembered it except me. It had a lid, surely someone looked in there before getting rid of it...wouldn't they? Happy Collecting
