The only buffalo I know of in Italy is fresh buffalo mozzarella around Naples. Congrats on an interesting find. How did you come across it?

I’m military stationed in Italy and I work with a guy who picks up disposed vehicles from the base. He always gives me the U.S. Change since he’s Italian and has no use of it. I always go through it and look for cool stuff!

I spent a whopping 8 weeks TAD in Naples in 2004. It was beautiful and I wish I could've enjoyed it more. I got some cool new Euros that I didn't have before but I didn't get anything like a buffalo nickel :p

Thank you for your service. Stay safe.

Oh, give me a home (or country) where the Buffalo roam (Rome).
PM me your address and I will send you a few of his buddies.

By the looks of the ribbon, it is an early Buffalo. Using a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar, you can etch the surface of the coin by soaking it a few minutes to reveal a date. Of course, that's only if you are curious and don't mind sacrificing the coin.

I've pickled many a worn Buffalo nickel to reveal a date/mm. I started a pickled nickel folder to see how close I could get to completing a set of Buffalo from coin roll hunting. I was surprised to see many semi-key nickels are passing through our fingers. Without the date/mm, folks are more apt to spend them I suppose.

Hey, that may have been mine. I lost one, along with some other change, in a Renault back in the 60s. Did he find it in a Renault? LOL

Congrats! When I was in Oslo I found a Danish 10 Kronor laying on the ground at the Norwegian Folk Museum.
