Ok, I KNOW that I know next to nothing so far, about coins anyway.... But shucks, maybe I got lucky. Just a got a few more pounds of coins via an E-bay auction. LOTS of fun looking through them so far. I'm trying to look up most all of them, even when I think I know what they are. That's how you learn, right? So I'm looking up this 50 Pfennig coin, a 1950 republik coin. Ten cents, twenty cents, TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS???? Uh, that sure LOOKS like a mint mark 'G' on this thing. My camera is in the truck and it's snowing out right now. Tomorrow I'll try and post pics so everyone can have fun popping my bubble. That gives me tonight to think I found something special. I also found this odd looking 1904 'something' from 'someplace' thats worth 2 'somethings'. No wrinting at all on it, but one side bears a very styalized two headed eagle crest. I'll post pics of that one too. Have a nice evening......
Looked in the Krause and found that "The 1950G coin was struck without authorization by a mint official using genuine dies-quantity unknown. Now for the bad news... Look just below that at the 50 pfennig Federal Republik reeded edge coin and you'll see that the 1950G is common. The expensive one that you saw has different reverse rim lettering.
POP!! Ok Trader, you win the prize. I see what you are pointing out and $200 went to 50 cents. At least I had an evening to enjoy. I missed the second listing. Now, can you explain to me what 'reverse rim lettering' is? I'm lost on that one. Thank you,
T-bird and Jody, You both got it right, sight unseen. Wow, you guys are good. Now Jody, I want to know how you managed to sneek in my house and take pictures of that coin. Let alone that it's lost in a pile of 150 other coins.... you had to sneak past my big dumb black lab, and his tail will usually beat a whole in the wall when someone walks in.....
Reverse rim lettering...look at the reverse of the coin. See the words? They're not in the middle of the coin, they're along the rim. That's all I meant
Art, You can thank T-Bird for identifying your coin. As far as how I managed to get a picture of your coin, well that's a secret between me and your dog. (lol)
