Ok fellow numismatic lovers. I purchased a handful of the original rolls a while back and decided to crack one open. I found this 3/4 of the way through. Can i get some insight as to what you guys think it could be or how it got there? Thanks in advance and love this FORUM!!!!! Sent from my LGMS210 using Tapatalk
I assume these were from the mint and not from a bank. Was there still 40 coins in a roll, or 39 and this? No idea how it got in there, it looks to be an ordinary metal slug. One of those circles that gets punched out of an electric box perhaps.
I agree with this guy. It looks quite a bit larger in diameter than a nickel, though. Was the roll "pooched" out where this slug was?
Yes it was from the mint. There were 39 coins and this one. It was in the 39th position in the roll. Right before the end. I didn't notice it sticking out in the roll. And it is slightly larger than the nickel. I thought it looked exactly like metal punched from a box. But the mystery if that is the case is how did it get there.... It's a plug from an electrical box, and the guilty party thru it into the bin/hopper of finished nickels. You just got lucky To bad it wasn't struck.
If it is a knock-out from a J-box it will have a ragged spot about 3/8 of an inch long on the edge. It sure looks like one.
@Ob77 You said that you purchased them "a while back" (not in 2005), so I assume that you bought them from a third party, not the Mint. Since that is the case, I'm guessing that whoever it was that sold you the rolls had searched (at least!) this one roll and carefully re-wrapped the nickels with the slug in place of one. Chris
