found an 1897 Indian cent at work today

I volunteered to work for another girl today so she could visit a friend. A customer came through the drive through with change and I sift through it as it's going through our changer machine and found this. It's my first one and I only paid one cent for it! I love having it and wondering where all it's been. I think it's really neat to own something that old.

I want to edit my post with this reply I have a few posts down to whoever may want to "flame" me for getting this the way that I did.

"I do understand tellers getting flamed if what I found was worth alot of money but isn't it only worth a dollar or two in it's condition? In a way I think why should I do the work of going through peoples coins for them to benefit for it? If they don't want to educate themselves or take the time to look through it themselves then why should I for them?

Now on the other hand if it truly was worth something and the person needed it then yest I would say something. But I have a hard time thinking that I should go through a hundred dollars of coins for a customer and then give them the coins back when they don't want to take the time to do it themselves. Do you get my drift?"

Let me add one more thing. If a customer comes in and has a coin or a note and asked me about it then I would tell them what I know about it. What little that would be. I do have a customer that I was going through his change the other day and saw a wheat penny. I mentioned it to him and he didn't want it. He then told me about a 64 quarter that he had that he thought looked different and I told him that it was silver. I will tell a customer what they want to know if they ask or take the time themselves to try to learn about it.

 Please do not flame her, she did not rip off an old lady. Someone deposited it in the bank through the drive through window.

BTW KDKenn, I only write this, we have another bank teller that posted something similar about half dollars and got flamed for "ripping off a customer".

    And coingratulations on your find.:)

There was a reason you worked for your co-worker, a purpose, and you were duly rewarded.

Actually banks frown on coin dealers in the bank. If you sat back and told everybody what their coins, banknotes etc. are worth in their deposits everytime they deposit a Star note, or a Series 1934 etc. the bank would lose deposits, and you would be suspect. I have several tellers saving stuff for me that comes across the counter, but if someone comes in and specifically ask for whatever it was that they took in, and are saving, they are required to sell it to the customer.

I did know that if someone comes into the bank and asks for something that is in my drawer that I'm required to sell it to them. I usually try to either sell it to another teller right away and buy it or have another teller with me watch me buy it from my drawer so that it's not there for a customer to ask for. I haven't had a customer ask for anything yet specific from my drawer except 2 dollar bills.

I ask for $2's all the time, right now I have about $40 worth of them. I love to spend them to see the reactions people give when getting them. I have more people telling me lately that they are seeing more and more of them.

No flaming allowed....once it hits the cash drawer it's public domain. Don't apologize. You are noble in your gestures towards the public.

Way to go KD! Nothing wrong with anything you did. I think they wore their "flaming" out on one of the Ricky or Richie - can't remember which one. As far as I am concerned once they hand it over it is the tellers - they can buy it or sell it to another seller.

Actually on Friday the teller at my local credit union - asked why I always get 20 ones. I explained I was looking for star notes, etc. She searched her drawer, but did not find any. I know for a fact the other tellers save stuff for one of their husbands(they told me) - that is fine with me.

You did the right thing here. You can't go through all the change that goes by you and ID all the coins for all the customers. I'd say go a pick through what you want and repay it immediately and don't talk about what you do at work. If your not stealing, and your not breaking any laws or rules of the bank then keep it to and for yourself, until you post it here on CT!!!

most flamers of 'ya ripped off a little old lady who will be forced to eat cat food because of you' are just jealous.

A bank ain't a coin store, and you have no obligation to anyone.

    Congrats on the coin.

I am jealous too, I have searched about 50 boxes of cents, and my earliest is a 1909 VDB Lincoln I got last month. Still no Injuns. I do have a few hundred wheats, quite a few Canucks, and a few Eurocents though.
