Looks like a sqeeze job - post mint damage. The rim looks flattened on the obverse, and there looks to be marks from vice grips on the reverse edges.

Definetally PMD, but it looks cool and it only cost a cent, so I would keep it.

Does anyone ever get that weird vision thing going when you see a close up picture of a coin? What I mean is.....those letters on that penny looked raised when I first looked at it.....I had to sort of "change" the way I was looking at it by looking away and then looking back, and then I could tell that the lettering was sunk in and not raised. This has happened to me with close up's of other coins too. The raised letters would sometimes look sunk in. Sort of like this box illusion. If you see the dot in the front, you are looking it it from "above," and if you see the dot being on the back wall, you are looking at it from "below."

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

I see it not on the front or back walls, but as floating inside the box.

The same thing happens to me at times. I think it's because your mind is expecting what's normal.

But, what is normal? Regarding the coin, recessed or raised? Regarding the cube, tilted up or tilted down? You have to decide in your mind, which is which.

I would let an expert look at this one.
it is not a squeeze job. the letters + date are above the surface + a squeeze job would not look like yours

The added letters are incused, Angelo, not raised. This is the illusion they're discussing.

Not only that but the letters are a mirror image (backwards) - a squeeze job for sure.
