I have been able to find the photos of this medal but I cant seem to find out what the significance is. Here is a link of the coin. http://www.finemedals.com/alphonse_mauquoy4.htm Is it worth anything? I know it isnt a coin perse, but I figured someone would be of help. Thanks
Googeling the information on the medal itself tells the story. In the Treaty of London, 1839, Prussia and England were among the nations guaranteeing the neutrality of Belgium. After asking England to "ignore that scrap of paper", and being rebuffed, Kaiser Wilhelm nevertheless invaded Belgium on August 4, 1914, resulting in Great Britain's entry into the war to honor the same pledge of it's component part - Prussia - which was being being violated by the German Empire in it's rush to get to Paris. In 1839 Prussia was the most powerful of the many independent German States, which were unified by Prussia's Bismark to revitalize the German Empire in 1871. Medals such as this, by well known sculptors like Mauquoy, are certainly collectible, but they are not coins and their valuation can be very complicated. Factors which have to be considered inlude the fact that many such medals were cast in more than one size and/or more than one metal; except in the cases of a few rare issues by exceptional sculptors medals below a condition equivalent to AU are generally worth very little; and the popularity of the specific medallist and/or the cause commemorated by the medal can have a huge effect on value. Your pictures are from the Smithsonian Institution's website, and depict a very high grade example. If you are looking for the value of one you actually have (or are considering buying), pictures showing its condition would be helpful, but unless there is a Mauquoy collector among our members, frankly I don't think you'll get any realistic valuation here. Completed auctions - either those of major auction houses, or to a lesser extent EBay and similar sites - are the only realistic price guide IMHO.
satootoko, Thanks for that information. I did give it a google search just didnt find anything as useful as what you found. Still havent seen a price for it, but from what I saw it looks as if it is probably worth no more than $75 tops. Probably a lot less.
