WOW!!! what an incredible find! today as I went to stewarts convenience store, I found a 1955 struck copy of the confederate cent! GREAT TRIP TO THE CONVENIENCE STORE!!!!!!!! Any ideas as to the value? thanks.
http://www.confederatequarter.com/cent.html "Another group of fantasies has the value stated as 1/100 instead of 1 Cent. These were made around 1955 for the upcoming 100th anniversary of the American Civil War. They come in 2 varieties, 1/10 which represents a dime or 1/10 of $1 and 1/100 which represents a penny or 1/100 of $1. The obverse of the coin is similar as the real CSA penny." If your coin has the 1/10 or 1/100, then it is not made from the Bashlow dies, but a new set of dies cut for the fantasy coins. There is still value on ebay, but check the rev. Jim
Hi, There are no price listings for these coins other than comparative with "completed" items on ebay or other auctions. When you get a photo up, it will be easier as I have seen them sold from under $5 to as much as $100 for top specimens. Most should be uncirculated as souvenirs, so it is mainly supply and demand. Some think the 150th anniv. of the civil war might increase value of Bashlow "restrikes" in 2011. Still an amazing find to pick it up in a parking lot. May I ask what part of the country you are in? Most of those were sold in the southeast. Jim Jim
I'm curious - when you found this unusual coin was it laying on the pavement loose (like any other dropped coin) or was it in a 2X2 or some other protective holder? Has it been run over by cars like many "parking lot pennies"?
It was just loose, like a "normal" cent would have been (no protective holder). And (thankfully) there was no damage from any cars going by. Like I said, I will post a few good photos on Saturday. It was a great find.
It's really strange what some people carry around with them , I was carrying arount a Trade Dollar when I thought it was a counterfeit , now that I found out it's real I just carry aroung a beat up Morgan , I know of another person on this forum that carries around a 1 oz. Eagle , it would make a nice thread to find out what people carry around with them , BTW mine are usually carried without any protection like 2X2s . rzage
