I found a coin and would like to find out how to verifie it and possibly its worth.

James Monroe on one side - "James Monroe" on top , "5th President 1817-1825" on bottom

Statue of Liberty on other side - 1$ beside it and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around it.

on side of it (around the rim) has "in god we trust" then "2005 P" then "E PLURIBUS UNUM" all the way round the edges in that order.

Seems to be made out of both Gold and some silver, simular to the look of a quater from the side.

Appears to have been in cerculation a while... I can't seem to find anything out there telling me anything about this coin... can anyone help me or is this coin just some normal dollor so I can give it back to my kid that found it.

    Welcome to CoinTalk.

Sometimes the edge lettering on the Presidential Dollars can be weak. What you are reading as 2005 is actually 2008. These coins are gold-colored, not gold. They are not rare; over 60 million 2008-P Monroe Dollars were minted.

You can read about the Monroe Dollar here.

That's right. It's only worth $1. But it is an interesting coin nonetheless. I doubt you have ever seen a coin with edge lettering before, right? Maybe this will pique your interest in coins and eventually turn you into a coin collector.

i would have to agree with "Hobo" that these coins are only worth one dollar but they are neat to some people who has never seen one before. I've have spent hundreds thru the US Mint's direct ship program.

When I've spent some at stores, some cashiers have mentioned that these are going home with me.

I think it's a particularly VALUABLE coin, being that it is a CIRCULATED dollar coin!

Most you know, are just tucked away.
