Found this in amongst my change. Was given it as a UK 5pence. As im still a newbie any info would be gratefully appreciated. The colour changes on the edge but looks to straight to be environment damage. Thanks
It's what's commonly called a "clad" coin. It's like an Oreo cookie, a core of 100% copper sandwiched between two layers of a copper/nickel alloy. US dimes (10 cents), quarters (25 cents), half dollars (50 cents) and some $1 coins have all been manufactured like that since 1965.
Thanks rickmp. So the edge is just the cupronickel worn away. I thought it looked a bit straight to be environmental damage
After Canada, the UK is the second most common country I find coins in roll searches from. I get 1p as cents, 5p as dimes and 20p as nickels. I believe now I have over six quid worth of British coinage from roll searches. I have even occasionally gotten 5p in change as a dime.
