I found this 1909s cent in a $25 box from the bank. I know the grade is just about as bad as you can get but still it’s a FOUND 1909s. I’m still working on the best lighting for my photos so as it stands you can only make out a 190 and the S mint mark, but I was able to see the whole date (with my loupe and a light at the correct angle). This is my best find to date hunting, just wanted to share that there are still rare coins out there in bank rolls (even if they come from Bank of America, like this box did). WAY to worn to decipher if it is a VDB, I may never know.
I'm with Frank. I think I see the VDB at the base of Lincoln's shoulder, and if that's the case it definitely isn't an '09.
I see a 190 and the only date for that is 1909, But I'm not an expert by any means. I can see the bend of the "0" what makes you think It's a 1?
Good catch, I missed that. Yes, I see part of the VDB under the dirt. Rub off the dirt, it couldn't hurt this piece. [yeah, I know, never clean your coins, but this ain't no beauty anyway.]
I was pretty sure that I was able to make out an 0. But I see something going on down in the bottom of Lincoln's shoulder. You might be right. It's really hard for me to be 100%. Maybe it's a crazy rare (because it doesn't exist) 1909 s with a VDB on the front. I don't have the coin with me but I'll try to knock off some of the dirt. I really thought that was an 0
Also, I don't remember if I was able to make out the last 9 I think all I could make out was 190, so this is really strange.
I've had a couple of good finds thus far. I've found Indian cents, a really nice 1923s, etc... even found a dime in a cent roll, it's a great hobby.
Great find, I introduced my friend to coin roll hunting and he finds an Indian head his first month in. Been coin roll hunting for years and oldest penny so far was a 1917
