hi im marypen and i have a quick question....

i was searching through some old coins and found this one.

there is a picture of a man in the front, says turkiye cumhuriyeti on the front about a centimeterbefore the brim of the coin going around the mans head.

on the back... it has a moon and a star next to each other, 1000 Lira 1984

could you tell me how much its worth in the US?

    thanks a lot ,

Sounds like a Turkish 1,000 Lira to me. Are you sure about the year? It appears what you are looking at it the bust of Kemai Ataturk - composed of copper zinc and nickel, but the type appears to begin in 1990 and run through 1994.

Maybe you have an earlier type. Best case scinerio appears to be UNC condition with a book value of $2.00.

    Welcome to the forum marypen.

    Please check that date again.

According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins there was a gold commemorative 1000 lira issued in 1970; nickle-bronze, copper, copper-nickle and zinc-copper-nickle proofs annually from 1986 through 1989; none of which had Kamal Ataturk's bust. The first circulation coins of that denomination were the ones mentioned by Rick (KM#997).

As a historical note, the 1994s were minted as rampant inflation was taking hold in Turkey, ultimately seeing a 150-million lira coin being minted in 2002, before the devaluation of Turkish currency to "new lira" dropped 6 zeros.

The star and cresent is the traditional symbol of islam. Appears on the national flag of Turkey as well as a host of other countries in different varieties in Africa and Middle East.

Either that, or maybe the face value. There is a 100 lira coin dated 1984 ...

Go to your local library and look up this book:
The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection
by PCGS. This is a fabulous book with full-colour photographs and close up on how coins are graded. Older editions should be available to loan anyway. Newer editions you can find in book stores and probably available in the library as reference. Either way the book gives you all the necessary terminologies and what they actually look like.

If it's not available physically in your area, i'm sure it's on Amazon.com.
