For those who don't read the US coin forum, my boyfriend and I (mostly me) inherited his uncles coin collection. In the collection are some Canadian and, I believe, Mexican coins. I'll do my best to describe what they are and hopefully someone will know if they're worth anything as collector's items.

11 five cent coins. The face has "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" and the picture of, what looks to be, a bird holding a ribbon from it's beak to it's claw? Rear is a 5 in the center with the year above it and "Centados" below it. Hopefully that sufficiently describes it. Dates are 1937, 1936, 1942, and 1940 (multiples of each). They came in an envelope with a note written on it. The note says "All mexican coinage has been out of circulation for many years. The metal was worth more than the money."

2 Canadian pennies. Face is a man I don't know, and wording around the edge is "Georgivs Vi D : G : Rex Et Ind : Imp :" On the rear are two maple leaves below "1 cent" The years are 1942 and 1946

1 Canadian penny. Centennial coin, 1867-1967. Woman on the front with a crown, bird on the rear.

Unknown coin (portugese?). Face looks like 5 dominoes arranged in a cross shape. The dominoes are all 5's. Around the edge it says "Republica Portuguesa" On the rear is 20 centavos above some sort of plant sprig.

2 Canadian nickels. One dated 1959, the other 1953. The 1953 one is in near uncirculated condition, still very shiny with no signs of wear.

Thanks in advance for any help/opinions. Investigating these coins has been kind of neat :)

Your 5 centavo coins have a combined current face value of approximately 1/10 of 1 cent U.S., due to the 1992 devaluation, in which 1,000 old pesos become 1 new peso. They are cu-ni, minted in Mexico City, valued in the range 50¢-$10 in VF to Unc condition. BTW that's a snake in the eagle's mouth.
Your Canadian cents have busts of King George VI and his daughter Queen Elizabeth II. The early ones are worth 10¢ to a few dollars in VG to MS63, and the centennial coin retails for a dime in MS60 and 20¢ in MS63. All are bronze.
I'm guessing that it is dated 1969-74, in which case it's bronze, worth as little as a quarter in VF, or as much as $7.50 Unc.
The chrome and nickle plated steel 1953 needs to be seen to be evaluated, as there are three varieties, listed in Krause from 15¢ to $2,300, depending on condition. The 1959 pure nickle coin starts at 20¢ in XF, to $1 in MS63.

Steve, there aren't any Canadian coins that are dated 1867.The 1858 & 1859 issue of the Province of Canada was the currency at that time.
