Thought I'd ask here. Posting on VAM World is like communicating with extraterrestrials. Just snagged this one, at a fair price. I can't guess the grade from the photos, but something else excited me. Check out the reverse of this 1880 Morgan. It's got a LOT going on. Appears to have a N clash above the wing, to the left of the wing, major blobs of metal surrounding the wreath. The best one is the moonshot from the bottom of the reverse to where the mint mischief is. Also might be a disconnected berry on the wreath, hard to say from the photos. The obverse has a neck clash, not sure if that is from the T on the reverse or something else. So what we got here?
For 1880, you're going to need sharp closeups, especially since there's no mint mark position to go on and the date position is fixed. Is there an 'n' clashed in the field left of the neck? Is there a "checkmark" on the surface of the 8? What does any doubling on the date look like? Despite the fact that it's clashed, if there's no part of an 'n' by the neck it won't be specified in the catalog.
You will be getting dozen or so coins from me once ANACS sends me back my 50 coin hoard I dropped off a recent coin show. I decided to get them graded first and then send to you for attribution. They should be back in my hands within a month or so. We had this discussion by private message, you suggested having ANACS send them to you directly after grading but it would have confused them thoroughly though because only 15% of them were worth pursuing attribution. The fellow who was district manager for ANACS recognized your name but I didn't feel comfortable leaving him complicated instructions. lol Thanks for your help! Maybe one day I'll send you a discovery item. This one is exciting (to me).
You can zoom in here on the photo by clicking it. There is a checkmark on the 2nd 8. There is an N clash on the reverse and a neck clash on the obverse. The raised metal surrounding the left wreath is something I've never seen before, and then there is that Elon Musk liftoff, raised metal from the left side of the reverse to the wreath blobs. Crazy stuff. For the wreath blobs and moon shot I used a fine line pencil to circle it.
Aren't those "wreath blobs" to the left just an inverted profile of Liberty's nose, lips, and chin? Looks like one of the bolder clashes I've seen...
Back 5 years ago I went to the Greenville, S.C. Oct. show. Met with the ANACS rep and he was VERY helpful. Took the form, filled it out listing also the VAM ID. He told me that any of the ones I got wrong would cost me money. I said OK. Paid him and handed over the 56 Morgans. 12 business days later I got them back. No extra charge. Sold most of them with GC. Another excellent experience. End of Hijacking.
Yes, those are clashes. No way to tell from the pictures if the thing above the 8 or below the E are anything other than hits on the coin.
No, I appreciate your input. Thanks! The ANACS rep was very attentive and patient with me as well. I had filled out 99% of the paperwork ahead of time but he double checked all 50 coins for accuracy and found where I accidentally left off a mint mark. He cut me a deal on grading by a buck a piece (off the coin show price) and I had 2 coins listed for attribution research. Only charged me $6 extra each for that, which normally is $16 per.
Got the coin in hand today. This coin has more going on than originally posted. It's got a wreath clash on BOTH sides of the reverse, plus a doubled ear.
