I know saving all copper, pre-1982 US Cents has come up a few times on this forum and I remember a few people saying they did this.

On another forum, hoardingcopper.com, a member (not me) has posted a video of a machine he built that sorts the copper from the zinc automatically.

I don't know how practical it is, but anyway.

It is in the main forum there, called 'Hoarding Copper Pennies', and the thread is titled something like, Coinsorting video here finally. Sorry, I do not know how to link directly to a specific thread.

    Just thought I'd share.

    Hi, :)

    Thank for the links.

It may be worth mentioning that pre-1982 Lincoln Memorial cents are not copper.
They are made of non-ferrous bronze.

There is a market for copper, but I'm not aware of any firm offers for non-ferrous bronze.
If anyone is, I'd be grateful if you would post a link, or point me in the right direction.

Is 'non-ferrous bronze' a weird name for a type of copper? :smile I thought pre-1982 Lincoln cents were made of copper and zinc-95% of that being copper.
I'm just curious-maybe I'll learn something new-which I'll be the first to admit is hard because I already know so much :rolling:
    Thanks for the links Dragon------Bill

Okay-just looked in dictionary. Ferrous means no iron-and bronze is made up of copper and tin. So does copper equal copper plus tin minus iron?
    My heads starting to hurts-:smile

Bronz = an alloy of Copper and Tin and/or other metals as noted in all Chemistry books. Our Lincoln Cents, prior to 1982, are .950% Copper, most of the rest is Zinc with what the Mint will never tell is minor impurities. Non-Ferrus indicates not being made of iron or iron alloys since Ferrus is the Latin name for Iron.
Way, way back in ancient times there was a Bronz age where those that could not smelt Iron would try mixing different metals with Copper in an attempt to make it harder. Some were Tin, Zinc, etc. Of course they were a little shocked when the Romans Swords cut right through their Bronz Swords being made of iron.

It's has nothing to do with a college education as even my son (5th grader) can look up information. It's called "googling" or better yet, actually reading a book without pictures. Try it sometime. My 11 year old can show you how to read and formulate complete sentences if you wish.
