As seen as the 2006 World Cup of Football is coming up in Germany in June,I thought that I better start a section on coins & banknotes that commemorate football (or soccer).I can think of a few countries that have had coins commemorating football.

    Great Britain 1996 2 Pounds (Euro '96).
    South Africa 50 Cents.
    Spain 1980-82 50 Centimos - 100 Pesetas.

Can anyone think of any others?

    Aidan.

Let's not forget the recent 2002 Japan - Korea world cup where both nations issued both silver and gold coins. To collect a complete set of both Korean and Japanese world cup coins will prove to be extremely expensive.

And when the Turkish team became third best ...

There are way too many football related coins in my opinion. :D I have those German €10 pieces too but did not buy, for example, the €100 gold coin from that series.

Countdown coin (from Fiji, I think)

A coin with a "movie" scene from the Germany 1974 World Cup

Not quite sure which countries "issued" these pieces. Then again, do I care? :D

Yes, I watched this sport once when I was a kid. Was interesting but a bit boring. Nevermind, there is still room for improvement so I invite every American football supporter to watch the king of sports next Wednesday (Barça-Milan) or Germany's World Cup on June

    :D :D

Soccer is not the real thing either. Bunch of sissies running around and then falling to the ground and clutching their limbs at the slightest hint of contact.

    Rugby is the real thing!

No No Those are all whimp sports. Ultimate fighting is the real tough guy sport. Anything else is just ballet.

I watched a soccer game once.. Yawnnnnnnnnnnn..... Time is better spent watching corn grow. I prefer watching a good fight. Once in a while a hockey game breaks out!

OK - the subject is coins, not sports - or coins related to sports. Let's get back on topic gang.
