I was just looking at some cheaper coins that I got in an auction yesterday, and I found something that jumped out at me.

Am I just seeing things, or is there a little something extra in the date on this 1858 Flying Eagle Cent ?

I swear it almost looks like it was an 1858/1856.
    It could be a 58/58.
Or, it could be nothing at all.

    Am I seeing things ?
It is only in G-4 condition.
I would have loved to see it when it had a lot more meat to it.
    :(

There are a number of 1858 varieties.
Sorry but this one is not the 1858/7 , this is a small motto, and the overdate is on the Large motto.
However, as for something else, my eyes ain't what they once were.

What I am seeing is what looks like another faded date mostly ABOVE the standard date.
It seems to angle up from right to left.
    It is VERY faint.
Like I said, I could be seeing things....LOL

I'm not seeing it, to mean I see what you're talking about, but I think it is just the condition of the coin, not an extra date.

Can you put a good pic of a number 6 from the same series next to that, and see how similar they are?

I can see what you are talking about, especially above the last digit. Iwill have to look at the Snow reference to check the RPD varieties for the 1858.

    Roto,

I think i see what you are talking about, but i am not an expert. My suggestion is to have it graded. I am not sure if that is an over date or not. Just because its not listed doesn't me it doesn't exists.

It looks more warped than the example 6, as if italicized. If someone can explain a shift in the appearance of the font, maybe you're still in the game. I don't know how that would happen..

But on the bright side, I think I see the Virgin Mary between the eagle and "STATES."

I know that pictures can be deceiving but it looks like it could be a tripled Punched Date! There appears to be a "5" NorthNorthwest of the "1", and "8" above the first "8" and another "8" above the second "8" in the Date. If so, then it is a new and extremely unique triple Punched Date.

It sort of looks like the following:
    1858 58
    __1858

I had to use underlines to space the numbers used to simulate the Primary Date.

I have also included a picture converted to the Grey scale.

    Good idea, Frank.
I'll try taking some new pics in black & white to see if it will pic up more.

    Also, WOW !
    Triple punched date ?!?
I will have to look closer.

I think I'm going to hyperventilate.
