Just got the "58". With the 1856 being considered a pattern and way over my budget, the 1858 over7 and 1858 small letters being varieties and variations. I'm considering my Flying Eagle set complete. What say you?
The 1858 is a strange bird. As you acknowledge, it has large and small letter obverses. Perhaps surprisingly, it also has high and low leaf reverses. Thus, four types of it. I dug this up in CoinWeek for you; happy hunting... https://coinweek.com/editors-choice/coinweek-iq-collecting-flying-eagle-cents/
Thanks eddie, good reading. I still think that the rest qualify as varieties in my mind. I can't imagine 8 or especially 15 and 41 varieties with the die clashes blows my mind. I'm sticking with my 2 and calling it a day.
Definitely. Personally, I'd get back in the saddle and get the other three varieties of the 1858, as they were minted that way. The rest he mentioned are but errors and flukes. But collect how you want. That's your business, not anybody else's.
