hey all... just wondering opinions on this flowing hair dollar and the price. I have been trying to get one for a while, i only have a 2k budget, and i am fine with damaged/cleaned coin if the coin still looks decent or has not been totally destroyed, do you guys think I can do much better then this for under 2k? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-Flowing-Hair-Silver-Dollar-Coin-NGC-VG-Details-Repaired-Harshly-Cleaned-/200796053871?_trksid=p4340.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D915655033158357112%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1016%26rk%3D1%26#ht_1900wt_1159 Or where is a good place to keep an eye out for a flowing hair dollar?
it doesnt stick out to me like i love it, but its decent for the price. i guess no reason to be in a huge hurry. Last coin i need to complete the set i am putting together. i am wondering if the more experienced collectors around here have seen nicer quality but staying under 2k. it there a better place to look for coins then ebay?
I agree. The surface looks unnatural to me, which is one thing you don't want(from your one post, of course). But I am a yn, so I have limited experience.
I don't know too much about those coins to tell you if the price is good or not but I kept searching ebay and found others for under 2K that you might want to look at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-PCGS-Early-Flowing-Hair-Half-Dollar-VG8-O102-Xtra-Nice-/110833080956?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item19ce2a9a7c#ht_1147wt_1185 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-O-117A-PCGS-VG10-Flowing-Hair-Half-Dollar-/140797925285?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item20c835d7a5#ht_2237wt_1445 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-Flowin...S_Individual&hash=item5ae7047924#ht_500wt_969
nah i am cool with unnatural surface most of the coins in my set have been cleaned, or fake toned, or damage. its the only way i can afford to complete my set. and Arthur, thx for the links man! one of those i did not find when i was searching. i think will hold off for for a little bit and keep my fingers crossed. if you guys ever see a decent one for under 2k, feel free to IM me, and thank you for the advice!!
the 3 arthur posted are natural surfaces and they arent damaged. imo a huge improvement to the first you posted.
If I may, I would advice against buying damaged coins. Long term you will not be happy with it. 2K is still a lot of money and the 1795 FH dollar is really not that rare. You should be able to find a G4 undamaged example for just a little over your budget amount. For example this 1795 FH (variety B5) graded G6 just sold for $2990 at Heritage: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1169&lotNo=4830
You can do much better than that for under 2k. While Julian is a PNG dealer his wears are way overpriced in many cases. Here are some examples, 4 of which are under 2k and should be able to chew abit of the price http://www.collectorscorner.com/Category/Category.aspx?catId=12&tl=true
those are half dollars. Here's the link you want. http://www.collectorscorner.com/Category/Category.aspx?catId=736&pId=2
wow, yes that is a MUCH nice coin, much better eye appeal, and if i found a coin that nice in that condition, i would be willing to push up my budget.
Flowing Hair half dollars are less pricey. and still a great piece of early coin history. but won't help with completing you dollar set.
I cant do it, I am trying to complete my US silver dollar collection. I need the flowing hair, and 2 varieties of pillar dollars from mexico, and I will finally have a complete set (my definition of complete at least).
I know Julian (the seller) and I like him very much, but I would be hard pressed to advise someone to spend upwards of $2k on a coin like that one with those issues.
