I love Antonine women and this one is somewhat scarce, so I couldn't resist buying it. My 19th denarius of this empress. Faustina II, AD 138-141 Roman AR denarius; 3.48 g, 27 mm. Rome, after AD 147 Obv: DIVA FAVSTINA, bare-headed and draped bust right. Rev: AVGVSTA, Ceres standing left, extending arm and holding torch. Refs: RIC 361; BMCRE 417; RSC 101a; RCV 4583; CRE 83.
This is a great coin @Roman Collector ... wonderful die stretch-marks, and just a nice coin. AND, I always enjoy capturing those scarcer types! Just a great feeling when you find a harder to get coin in the areas you focus. Great job! Hey, I am going to toss out a pretty well-circulated Faustina Junior so that it will REALLY make yours look great! I even have some die stretch marks on the reverse RI Faustina Jr 161-175 CE Ar Denarius m Marcus Aurelius 17.1mm 3g
Many numismatic works describe her hairstyle as braided and with pearls intertwined. However, none of the statues that depict her have pearls in the hair.
Sometimes I believe my main purpose on CT is to make posters feel glad they have a nice example compared to my 'also ran' coin. However my barbarous Faustina / Aeternitas denarius really shows those pearls.
Ha, RC. So you were the guy dancing with me for that one in the Naumann sale yesterday. It never dawned on me at the time. It's a very pretty piece, and I had my eye on it for a reverse upgrade. Congrats on landing it. Lucky for you I had my eyes on other pieces and the one I already have for this type is not far from the Naumann piece for beauty, so I backed off at 100. Both of our examples have the obverse flow lines, but I like the artistry of the reverse on yours better. Here's mine:
..19 eh?!?..ha!..i thought i was bad getting 3 or 4 of the same...i still just have this one denarius of her and can't figure out why it has all the cut marks on it...unless someone just didn't like her or.the checker had OCD..
