Got the following bills from the local flea market this morning, just wondering if there are any good serials in here? Being a coin guy, I tried to grade them like relative to how I'd grade coins...if it says UNC, it's crisp. If it says G, it's pretty beat up with maybe a folded corner or two, or maybe some pencil writing on the face. If there are any good serials I can take photos. Thanks for the help guys!

The serial numbers are ordinary. The Silver Sertificates are common, even the stars. The 35H* would have been the most valuable note of the bunch if it was in CH-CU (choice, crisp, uncirculated). The 03A Atlanta Star is common, the 63B Chicago Star is kinda cool, along with the consecutive SC's. How much over face are you into them ?

To be honest, I bought these with a group of coins for $100 (my cash)....the book value of the coins I bought was around $1100...so they're basically free once I sell off the coins I don't want to keep. (In case you're wondering, the best coin I found so far was a 1908S IHC in VF/XF.) I'm just trying to figure out a value for these for my records (general idea is okay.)

When you say "a group of coins," about how many coins would that be?

I'll post some pics tonight when I get back from dinner - I'd say about 50 coins total.

All of that for $100, man who did you buy those from?

I would advise against spending $100 for the above 12 notes. (in other words, I wouldn't)

Stju for clarification, I paid $100 for the above notes plus about 50 coins (that have an approx book value of $1100.) I was just curious about the general value / rarity of the notes (sincei don't have a black book on hand.)

Basically, I don't have all the dates/values memorized, but I'll pick out anything that I think is worth what I'll probably pay for it. Honestly, I don't even remember throwing that 1908 S IHC in the stuff I was keeping. The coin I was most excited about was a 1916 S Mercury Dime in AU...until I saw that S on the back of the IHC. It was at that point that I knew I'd had a great day coin hunting...

Here's a list of what I got for that $100:

Straight out of Coin Prices magazine, July 2011. Where does your coin shop get their prices? Graysheet? I'm not a dealer...

And you did see that those were IHC, not Lincolns, right?

Thanks, Merc - I appreciate it. I'll add that to my bookmarks. I also use CoinValues, eBay completed listings, PCGS priceguide, etc....when researching coins - but for straight ease of use, being able to carry a magazine/book is really helpful.

Plus, when I sell lower grade coins like the ones I got today, I never sell them for full book anyway. I think I have them listed for 73.6% of BV based on my guide, plus in my craigslist ad I've added that I'd throw in a 14S Barber quarter in G for $25 (which brings the percentage down to 72% of BV.)

Basically, I just use CoinPrices as a reference point - along with others as mentioned before - but it's easier to carry around when I go hunting. (PCGS Photograde iPod app is pretty nice to carry with, too!) I never expect to get full book value (or more) unless it's a key or a graded coin with eye appeal. Just so you guys know I'm realistic. But I do appreciate the link!

Also noticing that, while some prices are lower, some are higher. Haven't checked each coin, though...

Just for fun - I checked each coin. Coin Prices has the total BV of all these coins I've decided to sell at $611.50. Numismedia has them for $558 - about $50 difference. Of course, one could look at it like this:

*Some people would prefer, when buying, to look at the lowest available value guide (to get the best price.) Conversely, some people might prefer, when selling, to look at the highest available value guide (to again, get the best price.) I honestly just use the magazine because I can carry it with me (and my "smart" phone is about the dumbest piece of technology I've used in the last 5 years. Avoid the Samsung Moment.) I just noticed that Numismedia does an app...so I'm going to check it out and see if it requires WiFi to work (PCGS Photograde doesn't. If it works...maybe I'll dump the CoinPrices!)

*I'm selling the coins listed for $475 (or trade for silver Bullion Value for Book Value) which is well below what Numismedia says I should expect to receive. We can politely discuss which price guide is better - but my asking price is well below what I "should" receive. I'd probably even take a lower offer - because I got them for a sweet price. The price guide issue is a bit moot, IMO.

*I'd just like to add, in case anyone was feeling like I was getting in the least bit snippy, that I LOVE this forum and I appreciate all the help everyone has given me over the years. Never once have I gotten angry with someone or become righteously indignant. I am in this for the enjoyment of the hobby and I love learning new ways of looking at things (and I love learning how to do things better, like grading and photographing.) Once again, a big THANK YOU to everyone here. I can only hope to help someone like I have been helped.
