Bit at a time I have been trying to clean the ancients that my preacher entrusted me with. I am not well versed in anients or the cleaning thereof. Have just used dawn dishwashing liquid and distilled water to remove the gunk and olive oil they have been floating in. Any scrubbing was done with a old toothbrush. We have a total of 30 left with any discernible markings. I will post them from time to time when I get them as readable as I can. Any help placing names to these portraits, denomination or approx. time period is a great help. Thanks. Coin #1 Coin #2 Coin #3 Coin #4 Coin #5
#1 & #2 = Hard to determine emperor, because several struck the same time, and the ruler's name is missing from your obverses. Reverse type, though is: SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm. Circa 364-383 CE. Valentinian, Valens, Gratian. Compare to: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/ricix/type6i.html #3 = Constantine the Great. CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG. Two Soldiers, spears, shields & standards. GLORIA EXERCITVS. Looks like mint= Heraclea (dot-SMH?) #4 = Gallienus. LAETITIA AVG reverse type I think. #5 = Constantius II. Fallen Horseman (FEL TEMP REPARATIO) reverse. Mint = Siscia.
Also, for identifying uncleaned coins like these, another page that may help: https://www.tesorillo.com/aes/_rev/index1i.htm And, the one I linked, for the later ones (but won't apply to all): http://augustuscoins.com/ed/ricix/
Thank You very much for the help IDing these oldies. I will bookmark the two sites you mentioned. I am sure I will refer to them often in my efforts to put a name to the coins I've been able to bring up some detail on. Thanks again.
