Well My first auction finished a few days ago and everything went better than expected, I got my first sellers rating and i'm ecstatic. I hope that things will continue to go well on eBay. I am still new to selling but I am learning as I go but the biggest issue I have is how to sell the right way. I am mostly interested in selling the coins i've collected over the years but I've been told by a few people that if I sell multiple types of items (IE world coins) or collectibles such as glassware nobody will take me seriously.
Having US and World coins shouldn't really be an issue, most sellers do that. If by multiple types of items you meant a lot of the same one there are things you might want to consider how many you put up at once. If there are already a lot of them up it doesn't really matter though. It's true though some people get weird if the seller sells anything but coins. Some of it depends on how expensive your coins are too. 50-200 dollar coins you probably won't lose a ton of buyers with other items, 4 figure plus coins though and you might chase a decent number away thinking they're stolen pictures or a scam. The simplest solution would be to just make a second seller account for everything else you want to sell.
I never had a problem when listing totally different items. I once had baseball cards and fishing reels listed at the same time and everything sold. Just make the items attractive with good clear pictures and a simple description. You will start getting positive feedback and repeat buyers. Everyone's experience on Ebay is different so you will get all kinds of suggestions and ideas. I was following your item but got caught up with work and family issues.
Just remember "the better the pix, you'll get more clicks." You'll increase your credibility if you really make an effort to post solid photographs. Of course coin photography is about the most maddening thing in the world (search the forum for suggestions). Good luck!
Contrasting Amazon and Ebay A word to the wise. It seems that customers on Ebay think that every sale is a distress sale and will try to haggle a seller down to his last sent. This doesn't happen on Amazon. I have a 100% rating on both but have about 240 items on Amazon and only about 40 on Ebay. Even if a seller advertises a product at a fixed price and not as an auction, a buyer will try to get the fixed price item down to the last cent. It's like going to a dealer and getting maybe fifty cents on a dollar of what your coin or banknote is worth. So my advice would be to sell on Amazon before going to Ebay or your local coin dealer.
I find eBay (feebay) a great place to get a loyal following of customers. Of which they can deal with me later outside of feebay legally. After buying something from me they are no longer eBay's customers (if they we ever) their mine. I'd prefer the PayPal (payfoul) and the eBay fees to go to them. My opinion as a seller at eBay is eBay sucks in general. As far as selling other items with enough good ratings there it doesn't matter in the least what you sell. Just my opinion.
I agree Andrew. I am about the worlds most worst photographer. I spend way to much time trying to get an acceptable coin photo, that I don't even post anymore. Dave
